Paterson issued his first veto, on a bill which would have been an unfunded mandate that local police departments serving fewer than 150,000 but employs more than eight part-time officers to have a full-time police chief. "With this veto, Governor Paterson demonstrates an understanding of the direct correlation between the budgetary and policy decisions made in the State's Capitol and the plight of New York's local governments and property taxpayers." a press release stated. An Associated Press report states that the state Department of Environmental Conservation is banning all-terrain vehicles from 83.5 miles of roads through state forests and easement lands in northern New York where they were previously allowed.
